Giants activate RB Shane Vereen

The Giants will have a new offensive playmaker for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.

Running back Shane Vereen was activated off injured reserve on Saturday and will be available to play in this week's critical NFC East game. Vereen has not played since he injured his right triceps in Week 3 of this season, at which time he was the Giants' leading rusher.

Ben McAdoo said the final decision on Vereen would be made by the medical staff after Saturday's practice. Vereen had been making progress in his two weeks of practicing with the team.

To make room on the roster, the Giants waived offensive lineman Adam Gettis.

Vereen could add a spark to an offense that has been stumbling all season. The Giants averaged 364.2 yards a game through their first six games, which tied them for 13th in the NFL. Since that point, only the Browns and Rams have had worse offensive production than the Giants, who have seen their average plummet to 327.4 yards a game, 26th in the rankings. They gained just 296 and 234 yards in their last two games.

Victor Cruz described Vereen as "just another extremely talented individual that when the ball is in his hands he can create and make things happen. As you know, in this offense we need as much of that as possible."

The Giants were hopeful of reintroducing a second missing element to their offense in starting left guard Justin Pugh, who was limited in practice this week coming back from a knee injury he suffered on Nov. 6. Pugh is listed as questionable for Sunday's game and may not yet be ready to return to game action.
