Giants’ 2019 schedule requires minimal travel

The New York Giants knew they had the fourth-easiest schedule for the upcoming NFL season before the league unveiled the full schedule on Wednesday night.

What they didn’t know, however, was the who, what, where and when. That is all cleared up now and as it turns out, the schedule could not have worked out better for second-year head coach Pat Shurmur and his ever-evolving roster.

“This is an exciting time,” said Shurmur. “This week, we started the offseason program. And now we can see when we’re going to play. We knew who our opponents would be and where we are going to play, but there’s an excitement that builds once the schedule comes out.”

The Giants open the regular season on Sunday, September 8 against the Cowboys in Dallas at 4:25 p.m. This will be the fourth time in five years and the fifth time in seven seasons the Giants will open at Jerry World (AT&T Stadium), and the fifth consecutive year the Giants’ first away game will be in Dallas.

It’s also the sixth time in the past seven seasons they will play in Dallas in the first two weeks. Since 2012, the Giants have faced the Cowboys in their opener six times in eight years.

The trip to Dallas in Week 1 will be the longest trip of the season. Their other road games are in Tampa Bay, Foxborough, Detroit, at MetLife against the Jets, Chicago, Washington and Philadelphia.

“For whatever it’s worth, our travel schedule this year is really good,” Shurmur said. “We’re not doing a whole lot of travel.”

The Giants will not have to fly the final five weeks of the season as they have three home games and do not fly to Philly and D.C.

This season, Big Blue will host all three division rivals, Buffalo, Miami, Minnesota, Arizona and Green Bay.

The Giants have three scheduled nationally televised games: Thursday, October 10 in New England; Monday, November 4 at home vs. Dallas and Monday, December 9 at Philadelphia.

The Giants’ bye this year will be in Week 11 (November 17).
