Giant sunfish swam alongside boat off coast of Wales while occupants took pictures

A holidaymaker has spotted a huge sunfish in coastal waters off Wales and managed to capture it on camera.

Gavin Wood was on holiday with his wife when he made the rare sighting off Milford Haven. Ocean Sunfish (or Mola Mola) can weigh as much as a car and are usually found in tropical waters.

But there have been two other sightings in Wales in recent months, indicating these giants of the sea might be becoming a more common feature of Welsh seas.

Gavin said: "I have swimmed with sharks and dolphins so it was not a surprise, I have seen them before, but it was the first time for my wife.

"We were in our RIB, heading out of the Heads, I spotted the fin lazily flopping on the surface, the shape was wrong for a dolphin or shark, the motion told me it was a sunfish so I came within two metres so Kate could see. We took some pictures and let it be. Not often you get to see one of these so we feel privileged."

The sunfish spotted at Langland:

He said he used to live in Dale but was glad to be back in Pembrokeshire, even if it was just for a holiday.

"The Pembrokeshire coast has so much to offer and seeing a sunfish is now a highlight of the week and it’s only day one!"

There have been previous sights of sunfish in Langland and Mumbles.

The fish's name refers to its habit of basking in the sun close to the water's surface. The unusual-looking fish is often as tall as it is long, and when it swims near the surface its dorsal fin can see them mistaken for sharks.

They are harmless to humans but can be very curious.
