Giant spiders that can bite invade homes across UK

This Autumn it's likely you will come across one of the fastest invertebrates, the giant house spider.

Running up to half a metre per second, the large spider can give you quite a fright if spotted.

Usually, the giant house spider hides in dark corners of the house, often under the sofa or in the bath.

The reason they appear in the Autumn months is due to the males being on the lookout for females.

Wildlife Trust reports how males stay with their chosen females for some weeks, mating numerous times until eventually, they die, at which point they are eaten by their female

According to FalseWidowSpider.org, giant house spiders can bite and due to their size, their fangs can penetrate human skin.

However, it's said their venom isn't 'particularly toxic' to humans.

You can spot a giant house spider from their long-legs, dark hairy bodies and preference for houses and buildings.

They can be up to 1.6cm in body length, while their leg span is 7.5cm.

One of the most talked-about tips for keeping spiders at bay is mixing peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle, which you can then spray in corners of your home to deter the pests.

A TikTok user shared a hack and received rave reviews when she suggested spraying the solution on windows and doors.

She said: “For all of you that do not like spiders, this is a hack.

"You can put peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle. Spray it on the outside of doors, window frames - they'll stay out of your house."
