Giant spider gets makeover in Roppongi

Colorful knitted wool has been wrapped around the enormous bronze spider sculpture in the Roppongi Hills complex in Minato Ward, Tokyo, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the opening of the popular complex.

The 10-meter high spider, dubbed "Maman," is the work of French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois. American textile artist Magda Sayeg covered Maman's eight legs with almost 600 pieces of knitting, taking 11 days to complete the project.

While bronze sculptures usually leave a dark, icy impression, the meticulously decorated "Maman" -- in mellow colors like red, pink and green -- gives out a warm vibe instead.

Speaking to The Japan News, Sayeg said, "What I am all about is enhancing the ordinary, the mundane, the boring, the ugly with material that makes you feel happy, or makes you think of good memories."

The colorful "Maman" can be seen in the complex through May 27.
