Giant solar park plan for Flintshire farmland

A giant solar farm could be built on Flintshire farmland under proposals put forward by a community owned energy company.

YnNi Newydd wants to erect the major energy scheme on a 120 acre site at Bretton Hall Farm between Broughton and Saltney Ferry.

According to their website the 84,000 ground-mounted panel solar farm would be one of the largest community energy schemes in the UK, generating 33 GWh of clean energy each year.

Power may be sold locally to a large energy user - with industry giants like Airbus in the vicinity.

YnNi Newydd has submitted a scoping opinion with Flintshire County Council as well as approaching the UK Planning Inspectorate as the project is potentially a “Development of National Significance”.

The company is offering investors the chance to become a member of the community benefit society that will own and operate the solar farm.

YnNi Newydd (New Energy) says it is a society with the mission of developing and building community owned renewable energy installations across Wales.

The group has been asked to comment.
