Giant sinkhole spreads across bridge as locals race to stop oncoming traffic falling in

A giant sinkhole spread across a bridge following heavy flooding caused by 40 hours of relentless rainfall in India.

Shocking footage of the incident in Haldwani today shows the sinkhole emerge at the side of the bridge and quickly spread across the width of the road.

Within seconds the gaping cavity almost takes over the entire width of the road.

Panic-stricken locals can be heard desperately trying to stop an oncoming car from getting too close.

They also attempt to prevent passersby from going too close to the growing crater.

On either side of the bridge, waves can be heard crashing as the furious current rushes underneath.

The horrific conditions have been caused by more than 40 hours of relentless rainfall, which has resulted in the water levels of nearby Nainital Lake now overflowing.
