Giant 'sinkhole' appears after sewer collapses on main road

A collapsed sewer has caused a giant sinkhole on a main road in Bootle.

The water-filled pothole is fenced off, close to the Strand shopping centre on Stanley Road.

A large section of a busy main road is behind iron fencing.

A mechanical digger is nearby.

The work is being carried out by United Utilities, who were called out to the scene last Friday.

The hole has a depth of around five to six meters and is believed to have been caused by a partially collapsed sewer - which is an egg-shaped or oval sewer dating from the 19th century.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: "We received a call from Sefton Council to reports of a hole on Stanley Road, Bootle on Friday 7 June.

"The area was made safe, and underground investigations carried out using CCTV and radar which show Highway Drainage pipes and a larger brick-egg trunk sewer partially collapsed.

"We need to dig six meters to get on top of the sewer for a full engineering assessment.”
