Giant sink hole opens up over Florida road, swallows traffic sign

ORLANDO, Fla. _ A giant sink hole opened up over a Florida road over the weekend in Marion County just of north of Orlando and caused delays Monday, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

The hole opened Sunday morning on the southbound direction of Dogwood Road and Baseline Road and caused a street sign to collapse and partially obstruct the road, MCSO said.

Power was briefly lost in the area, but Duke Energy was able to restore electricity within two hours of the incident.

Baseline Road was closed Sunday in both north and south directions, but has since reopened.

While the hole is a shocking sight, MCSO says it isn't surprised with the incident given the amount of rainfall over the weekend.

"You can see we have a sink hole open up, and those of you, like myself who have lived in Marion County or Florida all of our lives, and we've had as much rain as we've had, in the last day these things kind of happen," the Sheriff's Office said.

Crews were continuing work on making the area safe.
