Giant queues at Leeds Costco as panic-stricken stockpilers clear out supermarkets

You would expect mid-morning on a Thursday to be one of the quietest times of the week to go food shopping, but the coronavirus pandemic has seen people desperate to get their hands on food.

Despite repeated warnings from supermarkets that there is no need to stockpile, hundreds of people were seen queuing to get into Costco in Leeds today.

The video below, which was posted on Twitter at around 10.45am today (Thursday), shows dozens of people waiting in line with their trollies in the car park of the warehouse-style supermarket in Hunslet, Leeds.

The queues can be seen snaking out of shot and round towards the front doors of the supermarket.

“Line at #CostcoLeeds at the moment, and all I want is just a handful of items,” said Dr Dooshima Stone on Twitter.

The panicked state of shoppers across Leeds has lasted for several days now and a number of supermarkets have seen their shelves emptied of essential items such as tinned goods, toilet rolls and soap.

Practically every supermarket in Leeds has seen its shelves stripped bare, with LeedsLive readers sending in pictures from Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Aldi, among others.

The government, however, has told people that there is simply no need to stockpile during the coronavirus pandemic.

Culture secretary Oliver Dowden has said that there is “absolutely no need” for anyone to buy more items than usual - although plenty of people do not seem to be heeding the warning.
