Giant hi-vis sculpture with Dr Seuss stripes appears in Leeds church

A massive, brightly coloured sculpture has popped up inside a church in Leeds.

The inflatable object measures 26 metres in length and dominates the Grade II* listed former St. Margaret's church building in Hyde Park, which has been transformed into the arts venue Left Bank Leeds.

The video above shows how INF23 dominates the entire floor space of the arts venue, with visitors immediately confronted by the giant striped structure as soon as they arrive through the doors.

But rather than gawp at it from a distance, people are actively encouraged to walk underneath the section of tubes and take a close look.

Courtney Spencer, director of Left Bank Leeds, said: "Our building has such an amazing sense of space, so it’s brilliant to be able to commission a site-specific sculpture that really utilises that.

"After over two years of planning it’s so exciting to see it in situ and I can’t wait to see the reactions of visitors."

INF23 was created by artist Michael Shaw, a former Leeds Arts University student who has also had work commissioned at the V&A and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum.

The huge installation coincides with Yorkshire Sculpture International, which has seen Damien Hirst sculptures dotted around Leeds city centre. It will also form part of the Heritage Open Days festival throughout September.

Left Bank Leeds is open every day from 10am until 5pm, and entry is free. To find out more - or to buy a ticket to the INF23 closing party, where it will be specially lit up throughout the night - visit the Left Bank Leeds website.
