A giant human head floating in the sky in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, piqued the interest of commuters on Friday. Passersby stared at the strange scene, which looked like a surrealist painter's art piece come to life.
The project, which was meant to coincide with the Tokyo Games, was a collaboration between the contemporary art team "me'" and the Tokyo metropolitan government, along with other organizations.
The piece called "masayume" was inspired by a dream that one of the artists had when they were in junior high school.
The head-shaped balloon, which appeared to be more than 20 meters tall, is based on a real person who was selected out of more than 1,000 people, from infants to those in their 90s, who entered a worldwide contest.
"We were torn about unveiling the project amid the pandemic, but we hope that by people seeing [the face] of a 'stranger,' they will reflect on the meaning of humans coexisting," said Kenji Minamikawa, 41, of "me.'"
