Giant Edinburgh 'tree climbing rat' spotted by local in city park

As a capital city, Edinburgh is no stranger to rodents running around the place, making the sewers and rubbish dumps their homes.

That is what was so surprising when one resident captured what looked like a surprisingly large rat the size of a small cat up a tree.

George Kelsey took the picture on January 3 of the rather large cheeky chap as he was possibly out scavenging for food.

The cute rodent looks to just be minding his own business as he balances perfectly off of a branch in the Balgreen area of Edinburgh.

George says that he is a lover of rats and feels that they can often get a bad rap from people who severely dislike them.

Historians say that the dislike of rats potentially dates back to the mid-14th century when the bubonic plague began to spread from Asia to Europe.

Unfortunately the little cute animals got the blame for the spread of the disease that wiped out large swathes of countries populations when instead - according to scientists - it was their cousins the gerbils who were to blame.

On what he found, George said: “In Balgreen, when we do rats, we do them big. Very big. And put them in trees.

“I thought it was an ROUS. A rodent of unusual size. It was massive, and in a tree. I like rats and think they have a bad press.”
