Giant East Lothian complex owned by historic whisky supplier seeks new owner for £7million

An enormous complex previously owned by an historic East Lothian firm has gone up for sale at offers over £7million.

The site, located at Ormiston, Tranent, belonged to Alexander Inglis & Son before the company fell into administration last month. The business was founded in 1950 and supplied cereal, barley, seed and fertiliser to a range of customers in the whisky, malting and distilling sectors. They had a turnover of around £100million, and 40 staff working at sites in Scotland.

Insider.co.uk reported in May that the business had been suffering from weaker trading following a poor harvest in 2020, and a "contraction in demand stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic". They'd also been impacted by legacy losses following dealing with the Philip Wilson Group.

There is also an office building at the site (Zoopla)

The board opted to wind the business down to maximise value to creditors, and Tony MacLennan and Chad Griffin of FRP were appointed joint administrators. Griffin said at the time: "The storage facilities are very well equipped and in strategic locations - we will now focus on marketing the assets for sale."

Now the 8.17 hectare site has gone up for sale, complete with 10 sheds providing grain storage for 78,200 tonnes. There's also four grain dryers and handling facilities, and ancillary building with office accommodation. There's also planning permission for an additional grain store holding 18,000 tonnes.

Agents Savills say the complex is "strategically located to major trunk roads and motorway networks". A closing date has been set for Friday, June 18.

The administrators are also selling sites belonging to Tayside Grain Company Limited and Inglis Grain Driers Limited.

Four lots have gone up for sale combined for offers over £16million. This includes the Meadows Stores at East Lothian at £7million.

The other lots up for sale are Charlesfield Grainstore, Scottish Borders (owned by Inglis Grain Driers Limited) at offers over £4.2m; Swarland Grainstore, Northumberland (owned by Inglis Grain Driers Limited) at offers over £2.8m; Errol Granaries, Perthshire (owned by Tayside Grain Company Limited) at offers over £2m.
