Giant asteroid to skim past Earth today, NASA scientists reveal

A giant asteroid is set to skim close to Earth today, NASA has revealed.

The asteroid measures up to 16 metres in diameter - making it almost twice as big as a double decker bus.

Although it has been classed by NASA as a 'close passing' asteroid, it's actually expected to pass Earth at a safe distance of 351,000 miles.

The asteroid, which has been dubbed 2019 TW1, was only discovered by the scientists at NASA's Centre for Near Earth Object Studies on October 5 and is expected to hurtle past Earth at some point today.

Thankfully, the chances of an asteroid ever colliding with the planet is very low, the Mirror reports.

2019 TW1 is actually one of seven near-Earth asteroids expected to pass Earth today - although the other six won’t come as close as this particular space rock.

Others include 2019 TC1, which will pass at a distance of 834,000 miles, and 2019 TU, which will pass at just over one million miles away.

The largest of all seven is around the same size as the Arc de Triomphe in Paris - but will pass even further away at four million miles from our planet.

The fact that NASA only discovered many of these asteroids in the last few weeks raises concerns about the asteroid detection system.

In July this year, a huge asteroid came within 45,000 miles of Earth, yet it went completely undetected by NASA.
