Giant asteroid bigger than Eiffel Tower passing earth and 'skimming surface'

An asteroid bigger than the Eiffel Tower travelling at 15,000mph is heading towards Earth.

The space rock measuring a huge 1,083 feet has been labelled "potentially dangerous" by NASA.

Asteroid 4660 - or Nereus - is set to 'skim' Earth's surface and despite passing 4.6million miles away it is among the closest known giant asteroids to pass us.

Astronomer and planetary scientist, Dr Franck Marchis, said that the gigantic rock is currently "not a threat".

However, the rapid travelling mass could be diverted by a number of things including an encounter with other asteroids of planets within our solar system.

The expert said: ""Any deviation could be an issue. It’s like if you have an evil neighbour — it’s in your interests to know where they are and what they’re doing.”

Scots will be able to catch a glimpse of Nereus as it hurls through the skies.

Worryingly, Dr Marchis - senior astronomer at the SETI Institute and chief scientific officer at Unistellar - said, theoretically, if it were to hit Earth it would cause devastation.

Impact could actually wipe out huge areas of the country.

Dr Marchis said" “Things could go wrong — there is always a possibility — but it’s small. We are monitoring this so people can sleep easy.”

NASA considers anything passing within 120 million miles of Earth a Near-Earth Object, with thousands tracked by scientists to monitor whether they're on a collision course with our planet.
