Giant Airbus Beluga aborts landing in Storm Ciara's strong gusts

The giant Airbus Beluga made several failed attempts to land in Chester during Storm Ciara's strong gusts.

Bemused residents spotted the massive aircraft circling above their homes as the pilot circled the area.

In the end, the plane with its famous whale face, touched down at Liverpool's John Lennon Airport.

The A300-608ST was flying from an Airbus site in Toulouse to Chester Hawarden Airport, reports Liverpool Echo.

However strong winds, as a result of Storm Ciara, saw the cargo plane abort landing.

Data from FlightRadar shows the plane circling Hawarden Airport at least twice before diverting away.

Originally the Beluga flight was due at Hawarden Airport at 2pm.  However, landing time shows it arrived in Liverpool at around 2.25pm.

Wind gusts at Hawarden Airport were between 39 to 40mph as the UK recovers from the worst of Storm Ciara.

The plane was built by Airbus, which employs thousands of people at its wing-making facility in Filton.

Last year, a spokesman said: “We are very much looking forward to seeing XL arrive in UK airspace for the first time and are delighted that our employees in Filton, where the aircraft’s wings were designed, as well as the people of Bristol, have the chance of being the first in Britain to see this unique aircraft up close and personal.”
