Giant £72m poo factory opens in Leeds to recycle all of your sewage

A huge new sewage treatment facility has opened in Leeds, which turns your waste into renewable energy and fertiliser for agriculture.

The state-of-the-art £72 million plant from Yorkshire Water is based at the Knostrop Energy & Recycling Facility in east Leeds, just off J45 for the M1.

It has the capacity to recycle up to 94% of sewage from across Leeds and transform it into fertiliser.

Not only that, but the eco-friendly development also generates more than half of its own power supply, by utilising a biogas that is turned into green electricity.

Sewage will be transported to the site from all over Yorkshire and dumped into one of the county's biggest digesters, which have the capacity to treat 131 tonnes at a time.

It's here that the brand new facility will convert the sludge into fertiliser for farms.
