Giant £55,000 sculpture and play equipment arrives at Roundhay Park

A huge new piece of play equipment has been installed in Roundhay Park at a cost of £55,000.

The Sky Climber, which is aimed at older children, has been installed next to the skate park and the Tram Park Princes Avenue car park.

The giant new structure stands an imposing four metres tall and looms large over Soldiers Field.

It is the latest addition to Roundhay Park for youngsters, following the £150,000 installation of the Lakeside Playground two years ago.

The money was raised by Friends of Roundhay Park, with a team of local mums instrumental in ensuring the cash was put towards something that youngsters can enjoy. Leeds City Council, local councillor Jacob Goddard, Coop and Veolia also made contributions to the cause.

Chief fundraiser Lexi Moffat from Friends of Roundhay Park said: "After the success of the Lakeside Playground Appeal we took on board feedback from parents and local families about the need to improve facilities for older children too.’

"We took the decision we needed to raise money to install an additional piece of equipment for the top playground. A new campaign was born behind the scenes and in six months we raised a fantastic £55,000 in grant funding."

Cllr Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s executive member for environment and active lifestyles, said: "We are very fortunate to have some truly fantastic ‘Friends of’ groups in Leeds who play such an enormously important and positive role in protecting and enhancing our wonderful green spaces and parks.

"The Friends of Roundhay Park are certainly one of these groups, and I would like to congratulate them and also offer our deepest thanks for their hard work in leading the fundraising for this new playground equipment."

Cllr Jacob Goddard, Roundhay ward, said: "We are very pleased to have been able to contribute to the web and slide. Roundhay Park is such a huge asset for the local community and people all across Leeds, so it's crucial that the park has facilities that children of all ages can enjoy.

"I would like to thank the Friends of Roundhay Park, as always, for their excellent fundraising efforts and all the work that they do."
