Giant 20-storey apartment block planned for site near Leeds city centre

A huge new development could soon be built on the edge of Leeds city centre after outline plans were drawn up for a 20-storey skyscraper.

The proposed tower block would consist of more than 100 one-bed apartments, 82 two-bed apartments and a handful of other flats of three bedrooms or more.

Blueprints have been drawn up by the developers, who are hoping to construct the apartment block on the corner of Marsh Lane and Saxton Lane, to the east of the city centre.

The land is currently occupied by JP Autos, a car service and MOT centre, but it represents a prime redevelopment opportunity in an area just a stone's throw from Leeds Dock.

The building would be clad in two different tones of red brick, with the roof sloping down at either side.

Although 204 apartments are proposed in total, just 11 car parking spaces have been indicated on the plans. The developers seem to be prioritising cycling for prospective residents, with 214 cycle storage spaces earmarked on site.

The plans are still at the pre-application stage, which means they need approval from councillors before construction can progress, although the first hurdle could be cleared at a Leeds City Council Plans Panel meeting on Thursday, October 31.

Nearby projects are also advancing to rejuvenate the area.

For example, 1,000 new homes could be built a little further along Marsh Lane in a bid to create 'Leeds City Village', while Brewster Bye Architects have unveiled pictures of what two new apartment blocks could look like on the perimeter of York Road.
