Giant 20-metre 5G mast plan for bottom of family garden sparks outrage

Plans to build a 20-metre high 5G mast at the bottom of a family garden have been met with dozens of objections.

Three mobile have submitted plans to build the pole, almost twice the size of a double-decker bus, and six adjoining cabinets on 552 Clarkston Road, directly across from Linn Park.

The application has prompted a furious response from locals who say it will obstruct their view and decrease the value of their homes. A petition objecting to the proposal has attracted over 230 signatures.

One local, whose garden wall the mast will be built in front of, was not contacted before the application was submitted and now fears that it will prevent her from being able to maintain their garden properly.

They said: "The base station at 20-metres high will tower above the middle of my garden wall. It is disproportionate to its surroundings and will create a huge monstrosity in the community and one that I will be forced to view every single day as there's no surrounding screening to hide such an eyesore, not only for myself but also clearly visible for local residents.

"There is absolutely no way that it would blend into the natural characteristics of the area and it will have a negative impact on the visual amenity.

Another local resident who lives in flats that will overlook the mast said: "This would be an absolute eyesore to all adjacent homes and the surrounding neighbourhood. The mast in its current position is well hidden by the trees but to move it and add six associated cabinets would obstruct the pavement and reduce the width of the walkway on a busy bend.

"There have been very recent communications to properties on Clarkston Road to cut back their hedges to allow the entire width of the pavement to be used for pedestrians and somehow this just doesn't make sense. I also fear that the six cabinets would be a magnet for graffiti which the council will then have to spend time and resources removing. I hope you will reconsider this application and leave it where it is."

Another adds: "In addition to the safety issues, the erection of this mast would also significantly affect the value of our property as it would severely obstruct our view from our front windows (we are in the upper conversion and currently have a very clear view over the park)."

East Renfrewshire Council said that it could not comment on live planning applications, but that the application will go before the planning committee if enough objections are received.

A Three spokesperson said: “Access to 5G has a vital role to play in boosting local economies, helping residents and businesses get faster and more reliable network coverage. This is why we’re working with the local council in Glasgow to roll out the UK’s fastest 5G network so that we can keep everyone connected both now and in the future. We are listening to the feedback from the community and will work with authorities on a way forward.”
