Gianluigi Donnarumma agrees with Frank Lampard about Chelsea star Jorginho's 'incredible' trait

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has leapt to the defence of Chelsea star Jorginho after his latest penalty miss on international duty.

The midfielder, who has been exemplary from the spot for the Blues, missed during the Euro 2020 final shootout against England - though his side still managed to go on and lift the trophy.

He then followed that up with another failure during the most recent international break, having been denied by Switzerland’s Yann Sommer.

Jorginho has now faced criticism that he should be taken off penalties for Chelsea following the arrival of Romelu Lukaku with one particular Twitter user claiming that he has "no idea why people call him [Jorginho] an elite penalty taker."

In the face of such criticism, international teammate Donnarumma has backed the former Napoli man.

Following the 0-0 draw with Switzerland, he said: "In training, we challenge each other, and he always scores.

"Unfortunately, he didn’t succeed tonight, but we all know he’s an incredible penalty taker. He, unfortunately, happened to miss [the penalty]."

Meanwhile, former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has previously admitted the fact that Jorginho could indeed be denied from the spot does not impact his skill from 12 yards.

Talking in October 2020, he said: "If you’re going to take penalties as regularly as he does - and I did - you’re going to miss some.

"You might actually miss a couple because of the level of goalkeeper and the pressured situation.

"It was not normal that he had such a great record – it was unique and stood out. I've got no worries with his confidence and he shouldn’t have. I'm not concerned about that at all but I’ll speak to him about it myself."
