Gianluigi Buffon reveals why Manchester United are part of the 'biggest regret' of his career

Gianluigi Buffon has singled out Manchester United's 2019 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain as the "biggest regret" of his career.

United flew to Paris in March of that year with a two-goal deficit to make up, having been beaten 2-0 by a scintillating PSG side in the first leg of their last-16 tie. The Reds were handed little to no chance of progressing into the last-eight, but turned the tie on its head to win 3-1, going through on away goals.

Romelu Lukaku netted twice for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, but a Juan Bernat goal had the French side going through as the 90-minute mark passed. But when Diogo Dalot's speculative shot struck Presnel Kimpembe on the arm, VAR sent the referee to the monitor and United were awarded a 94th-minute penalty.

Marcus Rashford struck the penalty beyond the experienced Buffon to send the Reds into the next round and dump PSG out early once again - an evening legendary Italian goalkeeper Buffon will never forget.

“We threw it away,” he said on Bobo TV. “They played in Paris with children. There was [David] De Gea, Lukaku and Rashford but the others were young.

“We made a mess, mentally. Probably the biggest regret of my career. We were very strong, a mega team.”

For all the glory of that night in Paris, United failed to go any further than the quarter-finals after falling to a 4-0 aggregate defeat at the hands of Barcelona. PSG, meanwhile, are yet to complete their main objective of European glory since being bought by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011.
