Gianluigi Buffon confirms Juventus decision as financial chaos beckons

Gianluigi Buffon has confirmed he will leave crisis-hit Juventus at the end of the season – and he could be joined by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The reigning Serie A champions are down in fifth place and need to beat Sassuolo on Wednesday night to keep alive hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Failure to play in Europe's top club competition will leave a €90million (£74m) hole in the Turin club's finances and risk the departure of Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar, 36, has just one season left on his £26million-a-year contract with his first club Sporting Lisbon the latest to be linked with his signing.

But Buffon, 43, will definitely be leaving after returning to the club from Paris-Saint Germain in 2019.

“We have reached the end of a cycle and it’s right for one to remove the disturbance,” said the World Cup winner.

Buffon has played 683 games for Juventus and has made the most Serie A appearances of any player in the competition's history.

Just 12 of those appearances have come this season, however, with former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny Andrea Pirlo's go-to man between the sticks.

Meanwhile, Juventus, who had won the Scudetto for the last nine seasons before Inter Milan's triumph this term, are set to change coach for the third time in three years by sacking Pirlo after only one season in charge.

Massimiliano Allegri, who left in 2019, and Real Madrid's Zinedine Zidane are the leading candidates.

And the chaos around the club has continued with the Italian FA threatening to ban Juventus from Serie A unless they renounce the European Super League project.
