MIAMI _ It has become as predictable as an August cloudburst in South Florida.
Giancarlo Stanton continued his remarkable home run outburst Sunday when he hit his 42nd of the season in the third inning against the Rockies at Marlins Park. That tied Gary Sheffield (1996) for the Marlins single-season record.
The Marlins' All-Star right fielder has been on an historic power surge, hitting 21 in his past 33 games. It was the 250th of his career.
He became the sixth-fastest since 1913 to reach that plateau, by games played, in his 941st. The others are Ryan Howard (855), Ralph Kiner (871), Harmon Killebrew (905), Albert Pujols (933) and Juan Gonzalez (936).
He also tied Frank Robinson for 10th-youngest to reach 250 at 27 years, 278 days.
"En fuego. Hot," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said after Stanton hit No. 41 on Saturday. "It just seems like every day you almost count on him hitting one. They're leaving some stuff there to hit and he's not missing it."
No. 42 was different than most Stanton homers. It traveled only 359 feet, an opposite-field drive into the lower stands in right field. He connected on a 97.6-mph fastball by German Marquez with the count full.
Stanton has hit home runs in all three games this weekend. It was his ninth in 10 games and 16th in 28 games since the All-Star break. He leads the major leagues by seven, with the Yankees' Aaron Judge entering Sunday with 35.
