'Ghost town' Scots streets empty on Boxing Day as Tier 4 lockdown shuts down cities

Scots have woken up to their first day of a fresh lockdown today after tighter restrictions were imposed by the Scottish Government.

Streets which would usually be packed with shoppers queuing from 6am to grab a bargain in the boxing day sales lie eerily empty today.

Typically Edinburgh's Royal Mile and Glasgow's Style Mile on Buchanan Street would be bustling this afternoon - but today they are like a ghost town.

All non-essential stores across Scotland were ordered to close on December 26, with only click-and-collect services allowed.

In a desperate bid to survive retailers have been forced to move their usual post-Christmas sales online as Scots are asked to stay at home.

It comes after mainland Scotland was placed into tier four at midnight after cases of a new strain of the virus continues to climb.

On Thursday it emerged that the new strain of the virus was responsible for 38% of the positive cases recorded.

The Boxing Day lockdown applies across Scotland, with the exception of Orkney, Shetland, the Western Isles where restrictions had recently been reduced. These areas have been placed in level three.

In level four non-essential shops, pubs, restaurants and gyms have been forced to close.

The period is intended to last for an initial three weeks, but the Scottish Government will review the restrictions after two.

It comes after a 24-hour period of relaxed rules for Christmas Day when bubbles could be formed with other households and travel restrictions were eased.

A travel ban remains in place for the entire festive period.
