Ghost captured in haunting photo at East Lothian castle

A haunting photograph of a ghost captured at a Scots castle still remains a mystery.

An image, dubbed one of the world's most haunting pictures, shows a figure wearing a ruff and centuries-old clothing can be seen peering from a ruined window at Tantallon Castle near North Berwick, East Lothian.

The castle, which dates back to the 14 century, stands on a remote headland near North Berwick and was badly damaged in an attack by Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1651.

The photo, taken by Christopher Aitchison in 2009 still remains an unsolved mystery.

It’s known that no mannequins or costumed guides are used within the castle and experts have confirmed through analysis that there is no digital alterations at play.

Our sister title Edinburgh Live report that Christopher Aitchison said: “I was not aware of anyone, or anything, being present in my picture.”

Even sceptics have been left baffled by the image after tests confirmed not technological trickery is at play.

Psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman, from the University of Hertfordshire, who studied the picture, said: “The figure appears to be in period costume but we know 100 per cent that Tantallon Castle is not the sort of place that has castle as a base dummies or costumed guides."

However, Alex Pryce, of the Edinburgh Skeptics group, was unconvinced.

He said: "When the picture is enlarged, it is quite obvious it is a woman with a carrier bag in her hand and her handbag over her shoulder.

"It is a woman in a pink jacket coming down some stairs with a shopping bag."
