A lawyer representing Carlos Ghosn apologized Friday for "tarnishing the reputation" of the former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman by making him disguise himself as a construction worker upon leaving detention.
Attorney Takashi Takano confessed on his blog that he had come up with the idea and that it was "an inept plan."
Ghosn, who has been indicted on charges including aggravated breach of trust in violation of the Company Law, was released on bail on Wednesday. He exited the detention house in Tokyo wearing a blue cap, black construction outfit, black-rimmed glasses and a white surgical mask, before entering a minivan carrying a stepladder.
Takano wrote on his blog that he suggested the disguise to prevent Ghosn's home address from becoming public knowledge, which could jeopardize the safety of Ghosn and his family.
The lawyer called the plan "a failure," and said he is "very sorry for causing trouble for my friends who helped with the plan, and for causing both tangible and intangible damage to many people."
