GHAZIABAD: A Ghaziabad court on Friday sentenced a man to seven years in jail for opening fire at police during a checking drive. The convict, 35-year-old Nurul, is a resident of Mustafabad in Delhi. Indirapuram police were conducting a checking drive in 2008 when the incident took place.
Ashutosh Kumar, the SHO of Indirapuram at that time, filed a complaint in the case on September 28, 2008. He said the police team spotted a suspicious person riding on a motorcycle and indicated to him to stop. “However, he opened fire at the cops and tried to escape. The police team narrowly escaped and arrested him after a brief chase,” the complaint read.
Police then recovered a country-made gun, two live cartridges and a stolen gold chain from Nurul. During questioning, he told police he had snatched the gold chain from a woman in Vasundhara a few days before his arrest. A case was filed against him in that regard.
During trial, Nurul admitted to his involvement in these cases upon which he was convicted. Additional district sessions judge Nitu Pathak sentenced him to seven years of imprisonment under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) and fined him Rs 2, 000. He is sentenced to one year of imprisonment under IPC Section 356 (assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft of property) and two years under Section 379 (theft). TNN
