Ghana squad embraces love of the fans at start of World Cup campaign

Ghana's top players have praised the support from fans as the squad went through its final tactical routines ahead of the World Cup opener against Panama in Toronto on Wednesday night.

"That's one thing they say about Ghanaians is that they always support the team," said midfielder Kwasi Sibo.

"The fans always show up," added the 27-year-old. "They always give out the love that we need as a as a team. And I feel that support, that love really plays a lot in the game when you're playing a match."

Ghana have been based in the United States since arriving for the World Cup.

They flew into Toronto on Monday and were greeted by hundreds of fans who had gathered outside the squad's hotel in the city centre.

"Arriving and seeing our people at the hotel, it was so beautiful," added Sibo who turns out for the Spanish side Real Oviedo.

"And it gives a different kind of energy and a different kind of spirit to know that we have the people behind us."

Missed chance to reach semi-finals

When the World Cup was a 32-team affair, Ghana reached the knockout stages in their debut appearance in 2006.

Four years later in South Africa, during the first World Cup to be held on the continent, Ghana advanced to the quarter-finals.

In the dying seconds of that match against Uruguay, Asamoah Gyan took a penalty that could have sent Ghana into the semis.

But he missed the kick and the South Americans won the penalty shootout that followed after extra-time.

Gyan joins welcome party in Toronto

Gyan was in the crowd at the Toronto hotel leading the singing and dancing for the current vintage of Black Stars – as the national squad is nicknamed.

"If all that was happening at the hotel was a taster of what we're going to get, it's going to be a fun time," said Brandon Thomas-Asante. "It definitely will be.

"We're lucky enough to get that kind of support when we play in Ghana and there the support is unreal.

"So when you come away, you're not quite sure how it's going to be, but honestly, everyone in the squad was really motivated and really appreciative of how we were greeted. And that's all you can ask for really to start off the campaign."

Ghana will go into Wednesday's game without their experienced midfielder Thomas Partey.

The 32-year-old, who faces a trial in Britain on several charges of rape and sexual assault, was refused entry to Canada last week.

Ghana's government hit out at Canada's handling of the player who has denied all the charges.

On Tuesday, Ghanaian officials appealed at a federal court against Canada's decision. But judges dismissed the appeal.

Queiroz warning about Panama

Just before Ghana play, England and Croatia launch their Group L campaign in Dallas.

The two European heavyweights are expected to jostle for the top two spots in the pool and automatic progress to the last 32, a knockout round created by the tournament's expansion to 48 teams.

Panama are featuring at the World Cup for only the second time. They finished sixth in the South American qualifying group with 28 points from their 18 games - the same tally as Brazil.

"Panama is a well organised team," said Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz. "They are very experienced and they are competitive. We hold them in high regard and we respect them as we respect England and Croatia."

After Wednesday night's match at the BMO Field in Toronto, Ghana play England on 23 June at the Boston Stadium.

Ghana then conclude the pool stages with a tie against Croatia in Philadelphia on 27 June.
