Ghana coach denies reports that Christian Atsu was ready to hang up boots

Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu has been told he is still wanted to represent Ghana at international level.

Some recent reports have suggested that the 28-year-old had hung up his boots after 62 caps for his country.

However, Ghana boss Charles Akonnor has played down the prospect and hopes to see Atsu back in action when football resumes.

Atsu's country could only watch on as the African Cup of Nations, which was due to be played this month in Cameroon, was postponed.

But after stories of Atsu retiring, Akonnoer said: "It’s not true that Atsu has retired from the Black Stars.

"We spoke at length but we did not have a discussion on him retiring from the national team.

"We agreed to give him some time to recover because he is struggling with that knee injury and I cannot ask him to come to Ghana to play again when he even travels across Europe to seek treatment.

"I have also been a player before and I know what he is going through; it’s something very serious.

"He [Atsu] is a good player and once he recovers, he will be invited."

Atsu last played for Newcastle in the 3-2 FA Cup win at Oxford United in February.
