Getting there

Fly to Basel from London City with Swiss (0845 601 0956) or from Liverpool, Luton, Gatwick and Stansted with easyJet (easyjet.com). Direct trains from Basel station reach Interlaken Ost in less than two hours, where there is an easy change to trains for Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald with connections on to Wengen and Mürren. Alternatively, Swiss flies to Zürich from Heathrow, London City, Birmingham and Manchester. Trains to Zürich main station leave the airport every five to 10 minutes, trains to Lucerne and onward connections via the wonderfully scenic line to Interlaken Ost take just under three hours.

For the all-rail alternative using Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord, Basel can be reached by direct train from Gare de l'Est, a 10-minute walk from Gare du Nord. From Basel there are direct trains to Interlaken Ost, which can be reached in 9.5 hours from St Pancras.
