Performance artist Dujdao Vadhanapakorn will premiere Humanimal, an interview-based performance that will get the audience to look within themselves, at 100 Tonson Gallery, Soi Tonson, Phloenchit Road, tomorrow March 21 at 8pm.
The title Humanimal is taken from Sud-manud, a novel written by Likit Vadhanapakorn, Dujdao's grandfather. The book invites us to witness the violence of human nature, the early development of capitalism in a rural area in Thailand and how it ultimately transforms a person to become an image of their own security.
The laboratory performance aims to give the audience an opportunity to witness a different being that lurked inside each guest performer and to soundlessly observe the animal within. All 16 guest artists are asked to disarm and give up any apparatus that helps cage both the human and non-human in them.
Dujdao's interest lies in the imperfectness or roughness of humans, especially when they are able to accept the brokenness and their vulnerabilities in themselves.
Therefore, she spent only two days to familiarise herself and explain the structure of the performance with the guest artists and consequently, improvisation will play a big part in the show.
As a psychotherapist, she designs the space and process of this performance for the maximum safety of the performers' mentality. Each guest artist will only have one chance to experience the performance as in each round the Humanimal role will be performed by different artists from a different practice of art.
Fifteen more rounds will be staged every Thursday until Sunday at 8pm, from Friday March 22-31 and April 18-28. It will be performed in Thai with English surtitles.
