Getaway Gangnam-Style!

Well, the pun practically writes itself. If you want to Seoul search in a vibrant and fun location with plenty of things to do, see, eat and shop, Four Points by Sheraton Seoul, Gangnam is an attractive choice. The 199-room property is centrally located and is a convenient stay, especially for shopaholics and foodies.

First Impression

Within walking distance to major subway stations, Four Points stands 21-storeys-tall, overlooking a busy intersection. You'll be greeted with cool artwork, including giant shiny apples by a Brazilian artist, from the moment you walk into the lobby, signifying that the place aims for a cool and fun vibe. The accommodation choices include Standard, Premier, Suite and Penthouses.

No-balcony Standard and Premier rooms come at a modest size of 23-25m², which may sound like shoe boxes to some but not so for me, thanks to the high ceiling. And if you're lucky enough to stay in a corner room like I was, you'll be treated to a sweeping view of the city and the busy intersection below.

There are separate cubicles for showers and toilet, which is electronic, but the wash basin is in the living/sleeping area. Those who are neat freaks may not like the layout as it runs the risk of puddles on the floor. Although modest in size, they have everything you need for a comfy stay and, when you'll be out most of the time, all you really need is a comfortable bed.

Suites are bigger-sized at around 45m² with separate areas for living and sleeping and a proper bathroom. Two penthouses await those who live large. They are amply lit with natural lighting through high roofs that resemble that greenhouses and each features a private terrace.

Staying In

This doesn't mean that those who stay in basic rooms would have to forego luxury as the hotel offers many on-site activities. The fitness centre on the sixth floor is open 24/7 with respectable amount of equipment whether you want cardio or weight training. From this floor, gents can walk up the spiral staircase to their sauna room while ladies can walk downstairs to theirs. They run proper self-service sauna facilities from 6am-9pm. Ladies are lucky to be able to luxuriate in their individual tubs. Gents can share two small pools; one with hot water and one to cool down in.

Start your day with a bountiful meal at the all-day dining Evolution restaurant where you can enjoy, besides the usual breakfast items, rocket salad drizzled in balsamic, made-to-order pho and a bowl of Korean porridge. Come back later for the a la carte menu, which features international dishes made with local ingredients. They have a PDR, as in private dining room suitable for family gatherings and business dinners. For a midday refreshment, stop by The Lounge & Bar for craft beer, coffee or wine. Business travellers aren't left out either as there's a meeting space on the second floor. You're pretty much covered whether you're here for business or pleasure.

Going Out

As you take a short stroll to Garosu-gil (tree-lined street) and get sidewalk-envy in the process (non-Thais, a properly paved pedestrian path is a rare sight for us Thais), you can stop by a 7-Eleven if you feel homesick. This store, however, isn't exactly the same as the ones here and comes with little quirks that I won't spoil here.

While Garosu-gil is lined with impressive-looking stores of big brands gearing towards fashionistas (Guess, Michael Kors, MCM and such), you don't have to be one to enjoy the area as there are shops with cool concepts and facades to explore and photograph. My favourite is the Gentle Monster's five-storey store, which also doubles as an exhibition of sorts. It's decked out in apocalyptic chic complete with crows and a tentacle robot, when all it sells in sun glasses. The cashier is on the top floor. But you probably won't expect anything less than this for a brand that is known for its outlandish store concept. The Line Friends cafe and store is also worth stopping by for IG moments.

If you really can't think of anything to buy, hit Art Box, which opens its first Thai branch on the sixth floor of CentralWorld, at the beginning of the street. It's bound to have something cute that catches your eyes.

In addition to shopping, restaurants and eateries line the street's many alleys. You can easily spend half day or a whole day here especially if friends and family ask you to buy specific items for them.

Ikseon-dong Hanok Village is further away but can be reached via the the public transport system. Make sure to wear comfy shoes as you explore the myriad of stylish shops, restaurants and cafes set in the old neighbourhood. Make sure to ask if you can take photos at the many Instgrammable spots. I came across a cool coffee shop set in a traditional Korean house and even a The Simpsons-themed bar.

From here, you can walk to Insa-dong to shop for traditional souvenirs and art appreciation at galleries. Walk north to Jagyeongjeon Chamber and Changdeokgung Palace. Bukchon-ro is another neighbourhood with traditional houses, where you can find more cute shops and cafes.

Final Verdict

Four Points by Sheraton Seoul, Gangnam is a great base whether you wish to explore something fun within walking distance or go a bit further away for culture and tradition.
