Getaway driver in fatal Bensenville robbery gets 8 years

Feb. 11--The man accused of being the getaway driver during the fatal shooting of a Bensenville convenience store clerk pleaded guilty Wednesday to attempted armed robbery.

Tremayne L. Davis, 25, of Chicago, agreed to plead guilty in exchange for an eight-year prison sentence and to testify in the case, with that testimony presumably to be used against the man accused of fatally shooting clerk Hussein Saghir in January 2014.

Davis is the second man to plead guilty in connection with Saghir's death; accomplice Kenneth Bardlett awaits sentencing after pleading guilty last year to aggravated battery with a firearm. Alleged triggerman Stephan Russell is awaiting trial in DuPage County on charges of first-degree murder.

The men are accused of attempting to rob the Sam's Tobacco and Food Mart convenience store on Irving Park Road about 5:45 p.m. Jan. 19, 2014. Russell, who police say was armed with a handgun, and Bardlett entered the store, where Saghir, 36, worked as a clerk.

Police said Bardlett and Russell confronted Saghir as he was closing the store, and the clerk tried to keep them from entering because Saghir's brother and a young relative were inside. Russell is accused of shooting Saghir once before he and Bardlett ran back to the van Davis was driving.

In court Wednesday, prosecutors said security footage from a Chicago gas station showed Davis, shortly before the holdup, filling up the van used in the robbery attempt.
