
Artisans cobble geta sandals in their workshop in Numata, Gunma Prefecture, on Thursday. The traditional wooden footwear has enjoyed a resurgence amid the pandemic, modified for indoor wear as people spend more time at home. Made with paulownia, these indoor sandals measure about two centimeters thick, less than half the size of ordinary geta, with rubber attached to the back to prevent floor damage. "I hope more people will wear geta casually like a pair of slippers," said Katsumi Maruyama, right, who runs the workshop.
