'Get well soon, Blue Messi' - stars show support for Everton legend Kevin Sheedy

Everton heroes of the 1980s have been sending well-wishes to legendary midfielder Kevin Sheedy after the wing wizard underwent an ankle replacement.

Irish international Sheedy, now 60, is regarded as one of the Blues greatest ever players and played a pivotal role in the era of success under Howard Kendall in the mid-1980s, scoring 97 goals in 357 games for the club between 1982 and 1992.

He has just undergone an ankle replacement and tweeted his thanks on Friday evening for those who helped him during his treatment.

Sheedy, who signed for Everton from Merseyside rivals Liverpool for whom he played just three first team games, said: "A massive thank you to my surgeon Andy for my ankle replacement and all the staff on Ward 1, Broadgreen Hospital, first class."

Sheedy was renowned as having one of the best left feet in the business during his playing days, which former team-mate Neville Southall humorously referred to when sending his best wishes.

Southall said: "The left one I could understand

"The right one must be nearly new

"Get well soon

"Blue Messi"

Peter Reid, Blues' powerhouse midfielder of the mid-80s side, also sent his support, tweeting: "All the best lad", with a blue heart emoji attached.

Sheedy, who was born in Builth Wells, Wales but qualified to play for the Republic of Ireland through his County Clare-born father, also spent 11 years coaching at the Toffees academy and has been credited with overseeing the development of a string of exciting homegrown talents such as Tom Davies, Ross Barkley and JonJoe Kenny.

He was diagnosed bowel cancer in 2012 but made a full recovery, writing a book afterwards about his experiences which helped save at least one man's life.
