Get set for the comeback of the jelly shoe

I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly…

But this summer, the chic set have committed to nostalgic sandals guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Yes, the jelly shoe is back and (trust us) it’s as charming as ever. A flurry of high-end labels have given the fisherman-style pumps a runway-ready spin — Prada’s come in rubber with chunky platforms, Gucci has added its GG logo, and Bottega Veneta has done versions in its signature green.

They have enjoyed some celebrity endorsement too. Jennifer Lawrence caused the most commotion last month when she stepped out in New York sporting a clear pair by footwear brand Melissa. You can find her “Possession” sandals online for £39.

Jellies, as they’ve been dubbed among the in-crowd, emerged post-Second World War when the leather shortage caused shoemakers to think outside the box for fabrication. In 1980, the Jelly Shoes label was founded, coining the name, and sending them up in style. And today, they are riding fashion’s frenzy for off-beat styles on your feet.

“They’re cute and practical, you can wear them in Brixton or to the beach,” says ES Magazine style director Jessica Skeete-Cross. “Style them with a tailored short and shirt. Something dressy, because they are quite juvenile.”

The best bit is there’s no need to splurge to splash around in them: Sun Jellies has them for £15, and Office for £30. “Opt for neons,” says Skeete-Cross. “And remember, enjoy them. These aren’t meant to be too serious.”
