Get set for a sweltering ... autumn? March maximum set to top summer peak

There's a high chance Perth will get an autumn day this week hotter than the highest summer maximum.

Autumn is upon us, but Perth could have a hotter day on Tuesday than it has had all summer.

The city is expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius on the day most people will be returning to work from the long weekend.

But if the temperature inches even higher, autumn will officially have a hotter day than in the peak of summer.

Perth's hottest day of the season just gone was 38C on January 14.

Cooler days and nights resulted in the mildest summer for 25 years, with a mean maximum temperature of 30.2C.

The lack of a single day over 40C was unusual for a city which normally experiences three to four in one season when high pressure systems linger in the Great Australian Bight.

Unseasonal season ahead

Perth was unlike most other Australian capitals, many of which sweltered through record-breaking summers, but it now looks set to join the pack for a warmer than average autumn.

The latest climate modelling from the Bureau of Meteorology predicts the next three months will be warmer than average for most Australian capitals.

Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Darwin and Adelaide all have a high chance of experiencing above average temperatures.

Hobart is the only capital missing from the list.

The build up to Tuesday's hot day starts with a top of 36C today.

The rest of the week's outlook is for no days under 30C and mostly sunny skies.

  • Wednesday: Humid and mostly sunny, 31
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, 32
  • Friday: Mostly sunny, 32
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, 31
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny, 30
