Get ready to run: Newy100 returns in 2021

THE 100-kilometre running event that raised almost $50,000 for Lifeline in January is set to return to Newcastle next year.

The Newy100 will be back and bigger than ever from May 1 to May 2 in 2021.

This time, it is open to 100 runners.

The event, founded by local runner Lyndsay Walker, supports local suicide prevention and crisis support services.

Mr Walker, who is training as a Lifeline volunteer crisis supporter, said the Newy100 was a "wonderful" event to promote the city while encouraging physical and mental health awareness

All funds raised would go to Newcastle Lifeline services.

Participants could register individually or as a team of up to four people to complete the 100 kilometre challenge.

Lifeline's senior business development manager, Pat Calabria, said last year's event raised close to $50,000 for Lifeline in Newcastle.

"Every dollar went directly to helping local people access face to face counselling, telephone crisis support, and bereavement support," he said.

Kaleb Paten, of event sponsor Pacific Maintenance, said most people had been impacted by mental health problems in one way or another.

"In our business we feel it's important to share setbacks and potential struggles with mental health to get help," he said.

"We like to support causes and organisations who value this focus, sponsoring the Newy100 was for us a simple and exciting decision."
