Liverpool City Council is currently looking for an assistant coroner to work on inquests throughout Merseyside.
The successful applicant will work on investigations and inquests into deaths in the Liverpool and Wirral Coroner Area, of which there are around 800 per year, working under a senior coroner and area coroner. Coroners are responsible for conducting investigations and holding inquests into deaths where the cause of death is either violent or unnatural, unknown, or if the deceased died in custody or state detention.
The job is also a vital public service, offering transparency for the public and an impartial investigation into a person's death, who the deceased was, and when and where they came by their death.

The job, particularly through inquests, can help to offer families closure on the death of loved ones by ascertaining the exact cause and details of their death. Inquests are often considered the final official chapter in someone's death, particularly if it was under suspicious circumstances, and they can help the families affected mourn their loved ones.
The jobs pays a £479 day rate. The job is permanent though not full-time, with days-worked depending on cases and the availability of the successful applicant. They must work a minimum of 20 days each financial year, though they are expected to work whenever possible.
Assistant coroners are expected to deputise for the senior coroner, covering the full range of duties and responsibilities they hold.
For the role prior experience as an assistant coroner is not essential, however applicants will be required to demonstrate an understanding of the role. The job is advertised as "an opportunity for lawyers considering their first judicial appointment," and applicants will be required to demonstrate "knowledge and experience of coronial law" as well as "knowledge of basic medicine" and "proven skills in conducting investigations."
The role is based at the Gerard Majella Courthouse on Boundary Street, where inquests will be held. They may also be held at venues in the Wirral when applicable.
