'Get him rested up' - Leeds United fans debate Kalvin Phillips' withdrawal from England squad

Kalvin Phillips has withdrawn from the England squad after picking up a calf strain in Leeds United's 1-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

The midfielder was selected by Gareth Southgate for World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary but will remain at Thorpe Arch for treatment over the next fortnight.

James Ward-Prowse will replace Phillips in the national camp after the latter suffered a minor injury against the Hornets despite playing the full 90 minutes.

The 25-year-old now has 11 days to recover ahead of the Whites' trip to Southampton on Saturday, October 16.

Leeds supporters have been reacting to the news, with the consensus being that fans are sorry to see Phillips miss out, but will welcome him getting to rest over the next fortnight.

Here is what some had to say.

@MacTaylor46 : Get him rested up, do him good to have a couple weeks off after 12 months of constant football

@FPLFan91 : The injuries we suffer are literally ridiculous, hopefully be fit and raring to go for Southampton in two weeks.

@Leedslad15 : As long as he's fit for Leeds thats all that matters.

@MikeyLUFCALAW : Good - bit of a rest for him

@El_Loco_Joe : Gutted for him, but glad he's going to have time to rest and recover before the next league game. #lufc

@jdlawson28 : Not sure if this is a good thing or not?? Means he will miss the England game and rest hopefully be back for Leeds game in 2 weeks #LUFC.

@lufcstevens82 : Good. Need bodies after int break.

This will be a blow to Phillips, who has been outstanding since making his England debut back in September 2020, making a total of 17 appearances throughout that time.

He also played a key role in reaching the Euro 2020 final, featuring in all seven matches alongside Declan Rice in a midfield-two as they eventually lost out to Italy.

Phillips' attention now turns to preparing for Leeds' Premier League game against Southampton after the international break and Leeds fans will hope he is fit for selection.
