Get Excited: US Burger Chain Shake Shack Is Making Its Aussie Debut Next Week At The AO

Australians have an obsession with American fast food joints. Five Guys’ first Aussie store was highly anticipated, and people are itching for an In-N-Out to come to Australia (hey, a 2018 Melbourne pop-up sold out in less than 60 minutes). Maybe we just want what we can’t have.

However, one of our fast food dreams is about to come true… temporarily. Shake Shack is making its Australian debut next week, and we’re bloody excited.

Shake Shack started out as a hot dog cart in New York City’s Madison Square Park in 2001. Since its start 25 years ago, the fast food joint has become a global franchise, opening in the UK, Thailand, Canada, Japan, Thailand, China, Turkey, and more. Basically, anywhere but Australia.

If you’re from Melbourne — or heading there for the Australian Open — you’re in luck. The American fast food joint will be slinging the Angus beef burgers, crinkle-cut fries and frozen custard milkshakes it’s renowned for during the Aussie Grand Slam.

“Australians have been asking for Shake Shack for years, and it’s something we’ve always wanted to make happen,” Shake Shack chief executive Rob Lynch said to The Age.

“It was never about moving fast. It was about finding the right moment to introduce Shake Shack in a way that feels worthy of the excitement here.”

On the menu, you’ll find Shake Shack’s iconic Shack Burger ($18.90), which includes a 100 per cent Aussie beef patty and the brand’s signature Shack Sauce. If you’re a vego, you can opt for the ’Shroom Burger ($22), which has a deep-fried portobello mushroom as the patty. There’ll also be the Shake Stack ($25), which is a combination of the two burger highlights.

Shake Shack will also be selling their beloved crinkle cut fries ($9.75) and cheese fries ($12.50), because let’s be real, you’ve gotta get fries along with your burger.

As for the shakes? There will be two exclusive AO shakes for you to try: Choc Fudge Cookies and Cream ($13.90), and The Blue Slam ($13.90), which is blended vanilla frozen custard, coconut cream, spirulina powder and macadamia, and is then topped with crushed macadamias and honey. IDK about you, but I’m drooling.

Holy shit I can’t wait to try these. (Image: Supplied)

Other drinks on the menu include Shack-made lemonade ($9), and the classic vanilla shake ($12.90).

Shake Shack will be based on TopCourt during the AO, as well as an express outlet inside John Cain Arena (however you don’t need to be a John Cain Arena ticket holder to access it).

Other food vendors that are making their Australian debut include:

  • Hector’s Deli
  • Layla
  • Season
  • Ho Jiak
  • JollyGood
  • Stalactites x Taverna
  • Suupaa

There’ll also be returning favourites including Entrecôte, Fishbowl and D.O.C.

Sure, I love the tennis, but I’d be lying if I said that a large part of me isn’t going to the AO to satisfy my foodie heart (and stomach). Here’s to hoping that Shake Shack’s pop-up is a huge success and they decide to expand their franchise down under!
