'Get a statue made!': David de Gea demand from Manchester United fans after West Ham penalty save

Manchester United's supporters have lauded goalkeeper David de Gea after his late penalty save earned a 2-1 win over West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

De Gea dived to his left to keep out Mark Noble - brought on for the spot-kick - from levelling the scores deep into added time.

United, who had fallen behind to Said Benrahma's effort on the stroke of half-time, thought they had done enough to avoid any late drama when substitute Jesse Lingard curled home a great effort with just one minute of normal time remaining, making it 2-1.

However, there was to be late drama when Andriy Yarmelenko's cross from the right struck the outstretched arm of United left-back Luke Shaw. Referee Martin Atkinson was instructed to go to the pitchside monitor following a VAR check and pointed to the spot.

Noble stepped off the bench given his record from 12 yards but saw his effort saved by De Gea, meaning United secured a huge three points and secured a third successive Premier League victory.

Unsurprisingly, United's supporters immediately took to social media to hail the Spaniard and thank him for his late heroics.

Below, MEN Sport has taken a close look at what some of them have had to say.

As you can see from the messages displayed above, United's supporters have most certainly made their appreciation for De Gea's late heroics known.

Although it was a poorly-hit penalty from Noble, who was thrown into a situation that he would not have been expected, De Gea still had to stand tall and do his job.

It could prove to be a huge save in United's season, depending on how things map out, and it will most certainly give the former Athletico Madrid shot-stopper a huge boost in confidence.
