Gerwyn Price calls for next year's World Darts Championship to be held in Wales after abuse he's suffered

Gerwyn Price has called for the PDC Darts World Championship to be held in Wales next year after being subjected to a torrent of abuse during this year's tournament at Alexandra Palace.

Welshman Price lost a stunning quarter-final clash with Michael Smith on Saturday night, during which he was subjected to booing and even complained to officials about the behaviour of some members of the crowd.

The 36-year-old has endured taunts and chants of "sheep sh***er" throughout this year's events, with Sky Sports forced to mute their coverage on more than one occasion.

And, as a result, Price on Sunday called for the PDC to move the sport's showpiece event to different countries every year, requesting the tournament be held in Wales next time.

"It's only fair the World Championships are played in each country," Price said on Instagram.

"Wales, Scotland, Ireland, England, Europe. Next year in Wales please."

World No.1 Price was clearly disappointed to lose out to Englishman Smith in the quarter-final thriller, which was so close it had to go to a decider.

However, he has vowed to come back stronger following this latest defeat.

"Absolutely gutted to go out in the last 8 of the World Championships having worked so hard the last few months," Price wrote on his Instagram story.

"So proud of myself for just being me and playing the best I can even with all the hurdles in front of me.

"I will get stronger, I will come back better, I will practice harder, I will sacrifice more, I will succeed. I will do everything it takes to be the best.

"I will be back. CLASS IS PERMANENT."

It is fair to say that the former rugby player, now nicknamed The Iceman among the darts fraternity, has become something of a divisive figure within the sport in recent years.

However, events during this most recent World Championship appear to have taken things to a whole new level.

Sky Sports were forced to mute their coverage of Price's match against Kim Huybrechts amid X-rated abuse from the crowd earlier this week, while the same chants were heard as he outclassed Dirk van Duijvenbode 4-1 in the last 16.

He was also the victim of songs such as: "You know what you are, you know what you are, you’re a sheep sh***er you know what you are!" You can read more about that, and the accusations of racism it sparked here.

As this year's tournament comes to a close, Smith takes on James Wade in Sunday night's first semi-final, while Peter Wright and Gary Anderson battle it out in the other tie later in the evening.

The final will take place on Monday, January 3.
