Germany vs Hungary pitch invader holds rainbow flag during Hungarian national anthem

A pitch invader held aloft a rainbow flag during the Hungarian national anthem in the build-up to Wednesday’s Euro 2020 game against Germany in Munich.

UEFA rejected an effort to light Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena stadium up in the colours of the rainbow ahead of the game in response to anti-LGBTQ+ legislation passed in Hungary.

Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter suggested making the gesture during Wednesday’s match to highlight legislation in Hungary banning school materials deemed to promote homosexuality and gender change and restricting the media from showing such content in programmes accessible to minors.

But European football’s governing body declined the request, saying it was made on a political basis while also claiming in a statement on Wednesday that they “respect the rainbow”.
