Italy v Germany: West Germany's Uwe Seeler dives to head the ball towards the Italian goal
31 May 1962 - West Germany 0 Italy 0 65,440 people watched Italy and Germany play out a goalless draw at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago in their first World Cup group game. Chances were few and far between as Germany stifled the talented Italian side, which could count on players such as José Altafini, Omar Sívori and Gianni Rivera. Things got worse for Italy in their next game, which became known as "the battle of Santiago" when two Italians were sent off as Paolo Mazza's team lost 2-0. Photograph: Popperfoto/Getty Images
Italy v Germany: West Germany's goalkeeper Sepp Maier is beaten by Gianni Rivera's goal
17 June 1970 - Italy 4 West Germany 3 (aet, score at 90 min 1-1) After Roberto Boninsegna scored in the eighth minute in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City a largely uninspiring game was drifting towards a typical 1-0 win for Italy when, in injury time, the game exploded into life with Karl-Heinz Schnellinger snatching a dramatic equaliser for the Germans. What followed was an extraordinary period of extra time that saw the lead change twice and five goals scored. If not the quite the "Game of the Century" it was certainly the "extra time of the Century". First, Gerd Müller put the Germans ahead, in the 94th minute, only for Tarcisio Burgnich to equalise four minutes later. The game then looked up for the Germans, when Luigi Riva put Italy back in front just before the end of the first period of extra time. However Müller struck again to make it 3-3 with just 10 minutes left, only for Gianni Rivera to grab the winner a minute later. Breathless stuff Photograph: Popperfoto/Popperfoto/Getty Images
Italy v Germany: Italy's goalkeeper Dino Zoff dives at the feet of a West German attacker
June 14 1978 - West Germany 0 Italy 0 Italy and West Germany played out a goalless draw in Buenos Aires in the second round group phase of the 1978 World Cup. Both teams had qualified with relative ease from their opening group and harboured ambitions of winning the trophy. Germany, however, would go on to draw with Holland before losing to Austria in their final game. Italy faired slightly better after they beat Austria but lost 2-1 to Holland to end their dream of World Cup glory. The game between Germany and Italy would merely be a dress rehearsal for their meeting in the final in Spain four years later. Photograph: AP
Italy v Germany: Paolo Rossi scores against Germany
July 11 1982 - West Germany 1 Italy 3 Perhaps Italy's most famous victory over Germany, the sensational Paolo Rossi starred in the final to guide his country to a third World Cup triumph at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid. After a goalless first half in which Italy missed a penalty the game opened up after half-time as Rossi's header set the foundation for Italy's victory. Marco Tardelli scored from the edge of the area in the 70th minute to consolidate Italy's lead before Alessandro Altobelli finished a counter attack by Bruno Conti to all but end the contest in the 81st minute. A consolation from Paul Breitner restored some German pride. Rossi won the Golden Boot for the most goals scored in the tournament with six, the first time the award had been given by FIFA at the World Cup. Photograph: AP
Italy v Germany: Italy v Germany
June 10 1988 - West Germany 1 Italy 1 West Germany entered the 1988 European Championships with home advantage but were held to a draw by an industrious and youthful Italian side that saw a young Roberto Mancini score his first international goal. Managed by Franz Beckenbauer, Germany were looking to find some flair to build on their World Cup Final appearance of 1986. Italy were looking to rebuild after failing to defend their trophy at the same tournament. Mancini gave Italy the lead in the 53rd minute after neat work by future Italian manager Roberto Donadoni. The lead was short lived as just two minutes later Pierre Littbarski laid an indirect free-kick into the path of Andreas Brehme whose deflected effort deceived Italy goalkeeper Walter Zenga. Germany and Italy would lose in the semi-finals to Holland and the Soviet Union respectively. Photograph: Bob Thomas/Getty Images
Italy v Germany: Gianfranco Zola of Italy takes on the German defence
June 19 1996 - Germany 0 Italy 0 Italy failed to make their chances pay in their final group game of Euro 96. The draw saw Italy eliminated from the competition as Germany went on to clinch the 1996 European Championship. Italy's best chance came in the 10th minute. Lazio forward Pierluigi Casiraghi was felled by German goalkeeper Andreas Kopke but the penalty was missed by Gianfranco Zola and despite dominating possession Italy could not find a winner. Even more galling for Italy was the Czech Republic's 88th minute equaliser against Russia. If the Russian's had held on Italy would have gone through as runners-up to Germany. Italy v Germany: Italy's Alessandro Del Piero celebrates goal against Germany
July 4 2006 - Germany 0 Italy 2 (after extra-time) Host nation Germany were hoping to make a record seventh appearance in a World Cup Final but their hopes were dashed by two late strikes in extra-time from Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero. A fascinating game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes but exploded into life in extra-time. Italy went against their defensive stereotype and played a fluid attacking game, well aware of Germany's terrific record in penalty shoot-outs. They twice hit the woodwork with efforts from Alberto Gilardino and Gianluca Zambrotta. Lukas Podolski twice went close for Germany, forcing a particularly good save from Gianluigi Buffon. With the game seemingly heading for penalties Grosso curled in a left foot effort following a pass from Andrea Pirlo. The shell-shocked German's pushed forward in vein and with the clock entering the last minute Del Piero produced a clinical finish over advancing keeper Jens Lehmann to send Italy into the final.
