A report released by the German electricity sector showed that the number of electric car power stations is steadily increasing in the country.
According to data from the Federal Association of Energy and Water (BDEW), there are over 16,100 public and partially public charging points nationwide.
The statistics included the charging columns of energy companies, garages (parking points), shops and hotels.
According to the German news agency, there are about 160,000 electric and hybrid registered cars that can benefit from charging points and each station can charge about ten cars, a rate consistent with the recommendations of the European Union.
The number of charging stations was 13,500 at the end of June, compared to 10,700 in the same period in 2017, BDEW reported.
Stefan Kapferer, BDEW's chief executive, said energy companies are still counting on accelerating the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, although there are almost no electric cars on the roads so far, making the operation of such stations unprofitable.
He called for accelerating the proliferation of electric cars, noting that this should be the responsibility of car manufacturers and highlighting the constant lack of models that can compete with fuel-powered engines in price and performance.
