Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) is meeting later on Sunday to decide whether to start formal talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel to form a coalition government.
The SPD leader Martin Schulz backtracked from his earlier opposition to an alliance.
The issue has divided the party.
