Germany's Beta Film Premieres Dutch Royal Drama 'Máxima' At Canneseries

Hunter Schafer's Horror Film 'Cuckoo' Set To Premiere At Berlin Film Festival

Germany's Beta Film sets its sights on the Croisette for the world premiere of Dutch Royal drama Máxima, selected to screen out-of-competition at Canneseries on April 9. The series, likened to Emmy-Award-Winning Netflix Drama The Crown by Variety, follows the love story between Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his Argentine love interest, Máxima, who later becomes Queen. The narrative delves into Máxima's challenges, including her father's political ties to Argentina's dictatorship, as she navigates her royal destiny.

The six-part drama series features Delfina Chaves as the titular character, with Martijn Lakemeier portraying Crown Prince Willem-Alexander. Directed by Saskia Diesing, Joosje Duk, and Iván López Núñez, the script was adapted from the biography 'Máxima Zorreguieta: Motherland' by Dutch journalist Marica Luyten. The series was shot in New York, Spain, the Netherlands, and Belgium, with Argentina's essence captured in European locations.

The ensemble cast includes Sebastian Koch, Elsie de Brauw, Valeria Alonso, Daniel Freire, and Ivan Lapadula. Produced by Rachel van Bommel of Millstreet Films and co-produced by FBO and Beta Film, the series received support from the Dutch Film Fund Production Incentive, Creative Europe MEDIA program, and Belgian Tax Shelter.

Prior sales of Máxima include Warner Bros. Discovery for Latin America, Germany's RTL, Croatia's HRT, ORF for Austria, Israel's HOT, Latvia's LV1, and Slovakia. The series will be available on RTL Netherlands streamer Videoland starting April 20.
